The Archangel Gabriel

For several reasons it seems safe to identify the figure as Gabriel. It is situated to the right of Zacharias, to whom Gabriel announces the coming birth of John the Baptist in Luke 1:1-25. Furthermore, the Annunciation, where Gabriel brings the news to the Virgin Mary, is a major subject of the images in the apse.
